Technology work for retail and e-commerce

Retail has a calendar. Whatever you plan, it has to be finished and stable before peak, and the systems that take orders have to keep taking them while you work.

What makes this sector different

Order, inventory and pricing are one problem in three systems. Most of what we are asked to fix sits in the integration between commerce, ERP and the warehouse: oversells because inventory is stale, prices that disagree between channels, orders stuck in a queue with no alert.

Peak readiness is engineering, not optimism. Load testing against realistic traffic shapes, caching that is understood rather than inherited, queue depths monitored, and a freeze period agreed with the business.

Card data drives scope. Where card data is stored, processed or transmitted, PCI DSS v4.0.1 applies, and the systems connected to that environment are in scope too. Reducing the scope is usually cheaper than securing a large one.

Where the work usually is

  • Inventory accuracy across channels

Stock counts that lag, reservations that do not release and oversells that cost more than the margin on the order.

  • Order orchestration

Split shipments, backorders and returns handled by rules spread across three systems.

  • Pricing and promotion consistency

The same item priced differently online and in store because two systems own the rule.

  • Peak capacity

A platform that has never been tested at the traffic it will get in week 48.

  • PCI scope creep

Card data flowing through systems that did not need it, pulling them into scope.

  • Warehouse integration

Manual steps between the order system and the warehouse because an interface was never finished.

How we help

Regulatory and contractual context

  • PCI DSS v4.0.1 applies wherever card data is stored, processed or transmitted, and to systems connected to that environment.
  • State privacy laws give consumers rights over personal data, which affects customer data stores and marketing systems.
  • Accessibility requirements apply to public-facing storefronts; WCAG 2.2 AA is the usual technical target.
  • Consumer protection rules affect pricing display, promotion terms and automatic renewals.
  • Sales tax calculation and reporting obligations vary by state and shape ERP and commerce configuration.
  • Payment brand rules and acquirer agreements may add requirements beyond PCI DSS itself.

Illustrative engagement

Illustrative scenario. Not a real client engagement. No outcomes are claimed.

A specialty retailer oversells popular items during promotions because online inventory is refreshed on a schedule rather than on change.

Starting point
Hourly inventory file from ERP to the storefront, reservations held in the order system and no reconciliation between them.
Scope
Move to event-driven inventory updates, hold reservations in one place, add a reconciliation job and alert when channel counts drift beyond a threshold.
Team
An integration architect, two engineers, a commerce developer and a QA automation engineer, with a load test before the next promotion.
Evidence
Drift measured before and after in a test environment, load test results at promotion traffic, and a runbook for the operations team.
What is not claimed
A scoping example only. No client, result or percentage is implied.

Questions people ask

Can you work through our peak freeze?

We plan around it. Work that touches order flow is scheduled to finish and stabilize before the freeze, and we agree what counts as an emergency change during it.

Do you do PCI assessments?

We do the technical work: scope reduction, segmentation review, hardening, remediation and the testing a qualified assessor will expect to see. We are not a qualified security assessor and we do not issue attestations.

Can you provide engineers for a short peak period?

Yes. Short contract assignments are common in this sector. Tell us the skills, the window and the location at intake.

Which commerce platforms do you work with?

Our consultants’ experience varies by platform, and we will tell you honestly at intake whether we have the right people for yours rather than claiming all of them.
