Cybersecurity

Microsoft Entra security

For many organizations the Microsoft cloud identity is the front door to email, files and Azure. We review how it is configured, how it is abused in practice and how you would notice.

The problem this service solves

Attackers rarely need to break Microsoft’s infrastructure. They steal tokens, phish multi-factor codes, abuse legacy authentication, consent to malicious applications or take over a service principal with directory permissions. Each of these is a configuration and monitoring question.

Conditional Access policies tend to grow by exception until nobody can say who is excluded. We read them as an attacker would: looking for the user, device or application that the policy set does not cover.

What is in scope

  • Conditional Access

Coverage, exclusions, legacy authentication, device compliance requirements and report-only drift.

  • Privileged roles

Global Administrator count, PIM usage, role-assignable groups, standing access and emergency accounts.

  • Authentication methods

MFA strength, phishing-resistant methods, SMS usage, registration controls and self-service reset.

  • Applications and consent

App registrations, enterprise applications, admin consent, credential hygiene and permissions to Graph.

  • Guest and external access

B2B settings, invitation controls and cross-tenant policies.

  • Hybrid identity

Entra Connect or cloud sync accounts, password hash sync, Seamless SSO and on-premises privileges.

  • Monitoring

Sign-in and audit logs, identity protection signals and retention.

How the work runs

Collect

Read-only access.

  1. 1

    Configuration export

Use Global Reader and Security Reader to export policies, roles and applications.

Analyze

Find gaps.

  1. 2

    Policy modeling

Test which sign-in scenarios the policies do not cover.

  2. 3

    Privilege review

Map roles and the identities that can escalate to them.

  3. 4

    Application review

Assess permissions and credentials of high-risk applications.

Improve

Prioritize.

  1. 5

    Action plan

Sequenced changes with report-only testing for Conditional Access.

  2. 6

    Hunting guidance

Queries to check for abuse that may have occurred.

Standards we map to

Frameworks and references

  • Microsoft Entra security guidance
  • CIS Microsoft 365 Foundations Benchmark
  • MITRE ATT&CK

Mapping findings to a framework is not the same as certification against it.

Before we start

What we need from you

  • Global Reader and Security Reader roles
  • Conditional Access policy documentation
  • List of critical applications

What this service is not

  • Licensing advice
  • Tenant administration

What changes afterwards

  • Conditional Access has no unplanned gaps
  • Standing admin access is replaced with time-limited elevation
  • Risky applications are removed or constrained

Questions people ask

Will you change our policies?

We recommend and, if you ask, help you test in report-only mode first. Changes are applied by your administrators.

Does MFA fully protect us?

No. MFA prevents many attacks, but session token theft, adversary-in-the-middle phishing and weak recovery processes can bypass it. Phishing-resistant methods and device-bound sessions help.
